About I-81

Interstate 81 crosses the Thruway at Exit 36 in Syracuse, about 57 miles west of the shop. We are not the closest shop on I-81, and this page does not pretend otherwise. We are on the route for carriers heading east toward Utica and Albany.

Where to say you are

Give the I-81 exit or mile marker and which way you were heading.

Call (315) 922-9680 with the road you are on, the direction, the nearest exit, mile marker or cross street, what the truck is doing, and whether you are somewhere safe. The dispatcher tells you on the call when a truck can be there.

What can be fixed where the truck is

When the truck cannot come to the shop, a mechanic comes to the truck: on the shoulder, in a parking lot, at your yard or on a job site. Battery jumps and replacement, tire changes, fuel delivery, air leaks, lights and wiring, belts and hoses, lockouts and other repairs that can be done safely where the truck is. If it needs a lift or a part that takes time to get, the same call arranges a tow to the shop.

Common trouble on I-81

On the highway most tows are engine, drivetrain or brake failures that cannot be fixed safely on the shoulder.

Long Thruway runs show up as wheel seal leaks, charge air cooler and turbo problems, and coolant leaks that only appear under load on a long pull.

Questions

Do you cover all of I-81?

The parts nearest the shop are quick to reach. Farther out, the dispatcher tells you on the call whether a truck can reach you in reasonable time, or whether a closer shop makes more sense.

How much does a tow cost?

It depends on the truck and the distance. The cost of any service is agreed with you before work starts, on the phone.

What can be fixed at the roadside?

Batteries, tires, fuel, air lines and fittings, lights and wiring, belts and hoses, lockouts and other repairs that can be done safely where the truck is. Bigger work goes to the shop.
